At $1.25 and $10 per million tokens, GPT-5 is now one of the cheapest capable models OpenAI sells.
GPT-5 runs $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output. It is worth being explicit that this page previously published $5 and $15, which was wrong: the input figure was four times the real price. If you modelled a bill here before 5 September 2026 and ruled GPT-5 out on cost, the comparison you saw was not accurate and is worth running again.
At the corrected price GPT-5 undercuts Claude Sonnet 5 on input ($1.25 against $2) and matches it on output. Against OpenAI's own newer tiers it is dramatically cheaper: GPT-5.6 Sol is $4 and $20, GPT-6 Astra is $10 and $50. Unless your evaluations show a specific task where the newer models earn the gap, GPT-5 remains a strong default.
